The story of tamales goes back to ancient Mesoamerica. It all began with a kernel of corn that eventually evolved into ground maiz. Finely ground corn flour that is kneaded into dough and spread onto a moist soft corn husk, then filled with a variety of savory or sweet fillings. The husk is wrapped shut and tied, then steamed. Tamales were a survival and ritual food that the indigenous people cultivated, preserved and passed on in tradition for generations to come. They remain a vital part of authentic Mexican cuisine and culture.

What is the Difference between Tamales vs. Texas style tamales?

The difference is the size.Texas style tamales also known as Texan tamales and Tex-Mex tamales are traditionally smaller than other regions, ours are 2.5 ounces. Most of our customers love the perfect masa to filling ratio, but for our customers that are looking for a bigger tamal, we offer our 5 ounce BigTex tamales.

Our tamales are gluten free and they have no lard in them, yet you’ll still get the authentic flavor and taste! 

Do you have vegetarian and vegan options? 

Our gourmet black bean and cheese tamales are vegetarian and our gourmet black bean tamales are vegan. 

Are the tamales spicy? 

Texas Lone Star Tamales has a wide range of customers and we aim to please them all. Most are satisfied, but there are a few folks that find them too spicy.We recommend new customers to start with our non habanero meat or vegetarian tamales. 

Do You have any recommendations on how to serve Texas style tamales?

Can I ship Texas style tamale packages to different locations? 

Yes, just make sure to specify the billing address and the shipping address. We also offer gift cards that are very convenient and they allow your loved one to choose their own combo package. 

How are the Texas style tamales packed and shipped? Is it safe to refreeze the tamales? 

Texas Lone Star Tamales uses high quality supplies to package their authentic tamales. According to the destination and ETA of each order, tamales are packaged in vacuumed sealed bags and shipped in a thick sided ESP cooler with “Techni ICE” Dry ice packs and dry ice to keep them frozen or at refrigerator temperature during transit time. Upon arrival, whether they are frozen or at refrigerator temperature they can still be refrozen if needed. In vacuum-sealed bags, they can stay in the freezer for 12+ months and in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. 

How long does it take to process and ship an order of Texas style tamales? 

Orders placed early in the week will generally take a day of processing and up to 2 days for shipping. 

Do you offer free shipping? 

Shipping is expensive, high quality materials and great delivery services are critical for delicious tamales and a great experience. Texas Lone Star Tamales values its customers and we do all that it can to help them with this cost. Currently, orders that are $99 or more qualify for free shipping (subject to change in the future). 

How do I reheat and eat my Texas style tamales? 

● To steam, remove tamales from the bag, and place in a hot steamer for 15-20 minutes from a thawed state (5-10 minutes more if frozen). 

● To bake, preheat the oven to 325. Remove tamales from the bag, wrap in foil, and place them on a sheet pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes if thawed, and 20-25 if frozen.

● To microwave, cut a hole in the bag. From the thawed state, heat one bag at full power 3-4 minutes. If frozen, heat at 50% power for 3 minutes; turn the bag over, then heat at full power for 1-2 minutes more. 

● When the tamales are ready, unwrap them and discard the corn husk.
